Long enough to be its own route. Has run basically the same route since 1930. However, for a while (at least 1966 until 1972), 122A used I-290 and what would become I-190 from Quinnipiac St to West Boylston St.

Boston routing of Rt 1
This route first appears on my 1939 map. It ran along Brookline Ave north from its intersection with Jamaicaway (then US 1) to Beacon St. It stayed along the south bank of the Charles, through the Sumner tunnel and up Chelsea St. Along an un-named street to the interesection of Revere Beach Parkway and Beach St, it then headed over to Broadway, up International St to the Bennett Hwy and rejoined US 1. C1 was decomissioned in 1971.

Rt 9 was originally numbered with several pieces. From Pittsfield, it was 109 to Belchertown. 109 continued on to Ware, but passed through Enfield until the flooding of the Quabbin. It then followed out to Brookfield where it met US 20. US 20 covered modern 9 from Brookfield into Worcester. It appears that no numbered road directly connected Worcester and Framingham. From Framingham, what is now 9 was numbered 115 into Boston. By 1933, this route was renumbered as 9, along with the straightaway between Framingham and Worcester. Enfield was also bypassed.
The 1930 ALA has a small inset of the Back Bay area of Boston. It shows 115 on Huntington Ave and MA 115A on Beacon St. The 1939 map shows MA 30 on Beacon. Rt 9 enters town via Boylston St. When it crosses the Jamiacaway, it becomes MA C9 and takes Huntington Ave to Boylston.
The next map of Boston is 1942. 9 and C9 are unchanged. However, MA 9A has made an appearance on Chesnut Hill Ave. It’s unclear whether the 9A designation extends north of Beacon St. North of Commonwealth Ave (Rt 30), it is MA 20A.
1950 brings some small changes. 9 & C9 remain the same; 9A now appears to go along Beacon St as well as along Chestnut Hill Ave. (30 also is routed along Beacon). The 1953 map confirms this; in addition, 20A is now also on Beacon.By 1956, C9 has been routed along Boylston to Charles St. By 1966, (and very likely earlier) C9 has extended up Charles St, through Leverett Circle, over to the Expressway and appears to end somewhere between the tunnels and the expressway.
Maps of the late 60’s imply that C9 was a loop of sorts. Inbound followed Huntington to Dartouth to Boylston to Charles over to the Expressway. C9 looped at the exit for the tunnel and became C9 Outbound. It followed the same route back to Leverett Circle, but then took Storrow Drive out to Charlesgate West. Then to Beacon and finally to Brookline Ave.
In 1971, the C routes were removed. C9 became part of 9. Around the same time, 9A was eliminated. Also around this time, 9 appears to have been truncated to end at Charles St, and possibly to Huntington Ave.

In 1933, the western end was in Holliston; the eastern end was in Brookline or Boston; it came in along Beacon St. 126 took the routing to Uxbridge; Uxbridge to Webster existed but not as a numbered route. By 1939, it had been extended to Uxbridge. In Boston, it was routed up onto Mt. Auburn St, up the Alewife Brook Parkway, down Mystic Ave to the Mystic Valley Parkwayto end at Fellsway. By 1946, the west end was out to Webster. Around 1971, MA 1A was moved and 16 was extended onto the Revere Beach Parkway as it is now.

RI line in North Attleboro to Attleboro
Expressway, full length
Shows as a proposal in 1961. Between 1967 and 1969, it was completed in Massachusetts. The 1969 state highway map shows a proposed route continuing east of I-95, then turning due south at MA 123. It would have crossed I-195 at exit 2, then turned west to return into RI. No route number is listed, just the designation “Proposed Interstate”. In 1971, this proposal was shown as I-895, without the turn west into RI. A 1972 map shows the built section of 295 listed as 895 as well; I would believe this to be a error. Between 1974 and 1975, this proposed route was removed from the maps.

Springfield to Holyoke via Chicopee

391 shows as a proposal in 1969. By 1971, a small section up to Chicopee St had been completed. By 1979, the rest was shown as under construction. Between 1983 and 1986, the highway was completed and opened.
Wareham to Salisbury via Middleboro, Milford, Lowell and Haverhill.

I-495 first shows as a proposed route from Westboro at MA 9 north to I-95 in Salisbury. By 1961, the section from MA 111 in Boxboro to MA 97 in Haverhill was under construction. The proposal had also extended south to I-95 near Mansfield. By 1966, the highway was built from Rt 9 to MA 110, with sections under construction to the Mass Pike to the south and I-95 to the north. By 1969, the enitre highway from Mansfield to Salisbury was open except for a gap between MA 126 and MA 85 near Milford. This was completed by 1971, and already another proposal was on the maps – an extension southward to the intersection of MA 24 and MA 25 just outside Taunton. Construction began between 1977 and 1979 on this section and was completed by 1986.
In March 2008, a $7.5 million project was approved to add a second lane to each of the ramps to I-90. The work is scheduled to be completed by early December.

Expressway, full length
195 was completed to exit 3 by 1961. By 1966, it had reached exit 4, and was under construction to New Bedford. It was complete to New Bedford by 1969. By 1975, the entire route was completed.
