History

Originally NE-2. My 1936 map shows US 5 entering Massachusetts on both sides on the Connecticut River. However, the 1930 ALA and the 1933 & 1939 maps both show the western bank as having US 5A. In any event, 5 crossed the river in Springfield and stayed on the west bank heading north of there. The route appears to have maintained pretty much the same path, with some small changes. South Deerfield was bypassed between 1950 and 1953; the new road was given Bypass 5 until I-91 construction reached it in the mid 1960’s.
